In her first solo presentation with Patrick Mikhail, Houston painter Emilie Duval continues her research into the functionality of our societies, focusing on a wide range of geopolitical, economic, and financial matters—and their existence through algorithms.
In Computational Dust of Existence, Duval explores the duality between the biological and the digital state. Unfolding in a series of nine new works with nine accompanying NFTs, hand-painted forest landscapes merge with computerized scenery that deploys a digital grid in an alternate world where the simulation intermixes with reality. Each painting and NFT symbolizes a digital metamorphosis to sequence the existence of singular entities with a computerized perspective. The assemblage of paint, drawings, and collages creates a multi-dimensional representation of an intricate future made of digital networks—where fiction and reality become inseparable.
Duval is a French-American multi-disciplinary visual artist. Her work is defined by research and observation to acknowledge the functionality of our societies. She focuses her interest on a wide range of contemporary matters and translates them into an artistic metaphoric vision to extract the very sense of society’s structural balance. Duval aims to lead people to a new observation of their surroundings by triggering a questioning reflection. Her work transforms words into a pictorial representation of society's future tremors by developing intellectual and visual connections with people.
Educated at the University of Paris and the École du Louvre, Emilie Duval has exhibited her works in exhibitions across Europe and North America including: the Holocaust Museum in Houston; the Texas Biennal; Rice University in Houston; Galleri Urbane, Marfa; Women Cinemakers, Berlin; the Bemis Art Center; Aqua Art Fair Miami; Art on Paper NYC; Dallas Contemporary Art Fair; Scope Miami; Scope London; and Heidi Vaughan Fine Art Gallery, Houston. She has been featured in numerous publications including the Houston Chronicle, New American Paintings, and Fotofest Volume 2.
