PATRICK MIKHAIL GALLERY in Montréal is pleased to present ABSENCE, an exhibition of photo-based works by gallery artist THOMAS KNEUBÜHLER. In conjunction with his upcoming exhibition “Landing Sites” at Dazibao in Montréal, Patrick Mikhail Gallery invites you to discover “Absence,” a 2001 work. In this photographic project, we encounter the absorbed faces of people whose gaze is lost beyond the frame of the image. With no distinctive signs other than similar poses and attitudes, the bodies of these young workers seem emptied out, completely swallowed up in their activity (Élène Tremblay). The project was shot in the early days when computer technology first became part of the work place, yet it has become even more relevant today.

We present ABSENCE in conjunction with the exhibition HYPER-ATLAS by gallery artist AMY SCHISSEL, from November 10 to December 31, 2018.

The work of Thomas Kneubühler often deals with social issues and how technology affects people's lives. Whether it’s the ambiguous boundaries of public and private spaces, the all-pervasive spectre of security surveillance, or even the radiant, if dehumanizing, beauty of cityscapes, Kneubühler's professional practice “tellingly identifies the co-existing insecurities, uncertainties, and subtle pleasures embedded in the structures of modern life.” Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, Thomas Kneubühler lives and maintains a professional practice in Montréal. He completed a Master's degree in Studio Arts at Concordia University and has presented his works in numerous exhibitions in Europe and North America, and most recently as part of Patrick Mikhail Gallery’s presentations at Volta Basel 2017 and 2018. His work can be found in the collections of the Canadian Embassies in Brussels, Belgium and Paris, France; McCarthy Tetrault, Vancouver; Basler Kunstkredit; Canada Council Art Bank; Canton of Solothurn, Collection prêt d'oeuvres d'art; Musée National des Beaux- Arts du Québec; Concordia University; Conseil des Arts de Montréal; Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada; Kunstsammlung Basel-Landschaft; and RBC Royal Bank of Canada.

Thomas Kneubühler’s project LANDING SITES will be exhibited at DAZIBAO in Montréal from November 15, 2018 to January 26, 2019.
